Mississippi Deer Hunting Season

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks makes the following notes about deer hunting season.

“The MDWFP White-tailed Deer Program’s goal is to provide a quality white-tailed deer population statewide and offer maximum outdoor recreational opportunity to the public without negatively affecting the resource.  Mississippi’s deer population is estimated to be 1.75 million, with hunters harvesting approximately 280,000 deer annually.”

Mississippi Turkey Hunting Season

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks makes the following notes about turkey hunting season.

“Few things are as thrilling as the gobble of a wild turkey, and few places can rival Mississippi for thundering long-bearded gobblers.  Mississippians have a rich tradition of chasing wary spring toms, and over the last three decades, the state has consistently boasted one of the largest turkey populations in the country.  

With over a quarter of a million birds from the Delta to the Gulf, hunters should have no problem finding a gobbler in the Magnolia State.”

Mississippi Small Game Hunting Season

Mississippi has some of the best Wild Hog hunting in the US.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks makes the following notes about wild hogs.

“The destructive habits and health risks caused by wild hogs have been a growing concern since their introduction. Wild hogs are a non-native invasive species that have been spreading at an alarming rate throughout the North America. According to a 2010 USDA study, $1.5 billion in damage can be attributed to wild hog activity each year.”

Mississippi Black Bear Hunting Season

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks makes the following notes about Black Bears.

“Mississippi is home to two subspecies of black bears.  The American black bear (Ursus americanus) is found in the northern one-third of the state and the Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus) occurs in the southern two-thirds.  

The Louisiana black bear (recently removed from the Federally Threatened Species list), as well as the American black bear, are both classified as Endangered under Mississippi law.  The two subspecies vary only in skull morphology and genetic makeup; to the naked eye, they are indistinguishable.”
