Full spectrum cameras are a tool that ghost hunters have used for a very long time. Some more than others. In fact, despite their rise in popularity with the ghost hunting community, there are still those that have not given it a chance.

They might have had their night vision camera by their side for quite some time now and don’t really see why that should change. I mean, it’s able to get a pretty good picture at night, right? Isn’t that all that matters? Well, not really.

Full Spectrum Cameras For Ghost Hunting

When it comes to ghost hunting equipment, one of the main deciding factors on what to get, actually comes down to personal preference. Paranormal investigators are creatures of habit and tend to stick with what they know best.

However, that is not always the best option or the smartest one either. In this post, I will discuss what full spectrum cameras are, how they work, how they compare to night vision cameras, which one I think is better, and my top choices.

What is Full Spectrum Cameras

In simple terms, a full spectrum camera refers to a device that is able to receive and process all types of light in the spectrum. This includes even the wavelengths that the naked eye is not able to see.

.These cameras are able to use the entire spectrum of light to create an image for us to see. From ultraviolet light to infrared, and everything that falls in between, which is where they get their name from.

Full spectrum as in absolutely the entire scope.

How Does Full Spectrum Cameras Work?

As stated above, a full spectrum refers to the idea of being able to see beyond what the human eye can on its own.

This includes visible light, infrared, ultraviolet, and anything that falls in between. The light spectrum ranges from infrared on one end and ultraviolet all the way on the other extreme.

Cameras can then be customized to be able to see more of each end of the spectrum through a conversion process. The conversion process itself is what is commonly referred to as “Full Spectrum”.

Here is an image of the full light spectrum:

Different Full Spectrum Conversion Methods

There are different processes that create a good full Spectrum. One of these methods requires removing the camera’s filter completely.

Therefore, allowing all light to be absorbed and used by the device. Other methods, however, mean removing the filter and replacing it with something else.

This other item will be able to see both Infrared and Ultraviolet, but filter out any visible light.

Below is an image for reference:

Best Full Spectrum Method For Ghost Hunting

To me, this seems like an easy choice. I consider removing a camera’s filter completely a far better method for capturing paranormal activity.

In fact, I do not fully acknowledge the other choice, where visible light is filtered out, as full spectrum. It seems to be more of multi-spectrum adaptation instead. It cannot be a “full” spectrum if some light is not being used.

A multi-spectrum adaptation may be useful for daylight paranormal investigations. During the day there should be a sufficient amount of visible light can overpower any ultraviolet or infrared light.

Images taken during that period of time should be very useful and high in quality. That, however, won’t be the case for investigations that are taking place at night.

Most ghost hauntings take place in low light and dark situations and will require as much light as possible.

The filtering out of any amount of light, regardless of how small it is, can have an extensive impact on the images. It could potentially be the difference between capturing a ghost on camera or not.

Full Spectrum vs. Night Vision Cameras

night vision camera is basically a device that has the ability to record video footage under extremely low light circumstances.

These devices are able to detect infrared light which is invisible to the human eye. Through a process of enhancement, it then turns the infrared light into visible light.

Night vision cameras allow the user to see in complete darkness. But, what are they really being able to see? The truth is that it’s only infrared light and nothing more.

As a matter of fact, most night vision cameras will actually remove all other light so it’s able to the infrared light available. Others even use a short band of light, which only allows a very small and specific amount of infrared to be detected.

Consequently, even though it allows the user to see in the dark, it takes away their ability to see any other light. Which, can drastically diminish the chances of being able to document any light oddities during a paranormal investigation.

This is why full spectrum cameras can work much better for ghost hunters.

What Makes Full Spectrum Cameras Better For Ghost Hunting?

What makes a full spectrum camera better is simply its flexibility. While night vision will only allow infrared light to be used, full spectrum sees it all.

This gives the user complete freedom and adaptability under any situation. As a ghost hunter, you will not be restricted to night time investigations and specific types of light.

The more amount and type of light that is being used, the better quality that the images will have. This is extremely important when it comes to capturing any paranormal activity.

Some people decide that they want to hunt for ghost during both day and night or simply indoor and outdoor. A full spectrum camera will get both jobs done with better results. There won’t be a need to be switching back and forth between equipment to get a good image.

Although there are a lot of different full spectrum cameras out on the market, there’s a few of them that simply get the job done drastically better. Below I will give you a few of my favorite ones for capturing ghostly images.

1. GhostPro

This camera was specifically modified for ghost hunting. A company by the name of Paranormal Playground customized it so that it would be able to record the full light spectrum, as well as night vision.

It also has a motion detection setting, which allows the investigator to step away while the camera continues to work. If any sort of movement is detected, the camera will activate and begin recording automatically.

This has to be one of a ghost hunter’s favored quality. We all know the importance of being able to in two places at once! The Ghost Pro is able to give up this amazing ability.

Furthermore, although it is not from the same brand/company this device looks exactly like a GoPro camera. It is compact in size and allows to be mounted to pretty much any surface, including the users’ own body.

Despite the different brands GoPro accessories are still compatible and can be used with this camera.

2. Full Spectrum Camcorder

Final Thoughts

What camera you choose to take to your next paranormal investigation will ultimately depend on personal preference. Maybe the night vision camera you are currently using has been with you for years and you are having a hard time letting it go.

However, that might not always be the best option. A full spectrum camera has everything that a ghost hunter wants and needs in order to make their job easier.

This device will be able to capture images in almost all settings without disrupting the environment. A crucial quality to any paranormal investigator trying to protect the integrity of his/her work.

The user’s sight will not be affected by the constant snapping of bright lights created by a flash. It even allows the ghost hunter to do his work without the need to carry around additional ghost hunting lights.

The camera’s LCD screen can be carefully monitored to see and track everything that is going on.

It might just be time you leave that old camcorder behind and invest in a full spectrum camera! Who knows, this might be just what you were missing. Have you ever used a full spectrum camera before? How did you like it? Which one do you like the most?
